What's probably happening is that your original object - the one that you're applying the array modifier to - has a scale value that's either larger or smaller than 1. You can remedy this by applying the Scale of the object (Ctrl+A -> Scale to Obdata). It always wants to scale the object being modified. Also, the settings in the example pictures are too tiny to read.
